Timeline of JWI Filter Press ownership and product evolution from 1980s to present.

The History of the JWI Filter Press

From JWI to US Filter, Siemens, Evoqua, and Xylem

If you own a JWI filter press, you may have noticed that the equipment has been sold under several different company names over the years. Depending on the age of your machine, it may carry a JWI, US Filter, Siemens, Evoqua, or Xylem nameplate.

Although the ownership changed several times, thousands of these filter presses remain in operation today in industrial wastewater treatment plants, plating facilities, chemical plants, mining operations, food processing facilities, and municipal sludge dewatering applications.

At JWI Filter Press Parts, we continue to support these machines with replacement cloths, plates, center feed pipe assemblies, gasketing, hydraulic components, cylinders, and technical support.

Who Was JWI?

JWI, originally known as JWI Inc., became one of the most recognized manufacturers of filter presses in North America.

Their equipment was known for:

  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Recessed chamber filter presses
  • Automatic plate shifters
  • Reliable hydraulic closure systems
  • Long equipment life

Many JWI filter presses installed in the 1980s and 1990s remain in operation today.

Common industries included:

  • Metal finishing
  • Electroplating
  • Mining
  • Chemical processing
  • Food processing
  • Municipal wastewater treatment

JWI Becomes US Filter

As the wastewater treatment industry consolidated, JWI became part of US Filter.

Many filter presses manufactured during this period were mechanically identical to earlier JWI machines.

Customers often encounter equipment carrying either:

  • JWI
  • JWI/US Filter
  • US Filter

nameplates while ordering replacement parts.

Fortunately, the majority of replacement components remain interchangeable.

Siemens Acquires US Filter

US Filter was eventually acquired by Siemens.

During this period, many filter presses were marketed as Siemens J-Press filter presses.

The J-Press name became extremely popular and remains one of the most recognized filter press brands in North America.

Many customers today refer to their equipment simply as a:

  • Siemens J-Press
  • J-Press
  • JWI Filter Press

even though the machines are nearly identical.

Evoqua Takes Over

The water treatment business was later separated and became Evoqua Water Technologies.

The Evoqua J-Press continued the long history of the original JWI filter press design.

Replacement parts often remained compatible between:

  • JWI
  • US Filter
  • Siemens
  • Evoqua

machines.

This is why many facilities continue to purchase replacement parts for equipment that may be 20 to 40 years old.

Xylem Acquires Evoqua

Most recently, Evoqua became part of Xylem.

Today, many operators searching for JWI filter press parts are actually operating equipment manufactured under one of the following names:

  • JWI
  • US Filter
  • Siemens
  • Evoqua
  • Xylem

While the company ownership changed, the installed equipment base remains enormous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at dsenney@metchem.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

One reason these machines remain popular is their durability.

Many facilities continue operating presses that are:

  • 20 years old
  • 30 years old
  • 40 years old

with only routine maintenance.

Common replacement items include:

  • Filter cloths
  • Center feed pipe assemblies
  • Filter plate gasketing
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Hydraulic power units
  • Plate handles
  • Corner liner pipes

Most of these components can be replaced without purchasing an entirely new machine.

In many cases, repairing a JWI filter press is the most economical solution.

However, replacement should be considered when:

  • Structural corrosion exists
  • Side bars are damaged
  • Hydraulic systems are obsolete
  • Replacement plates are unavailable
  • Production capacity has outgrown the press

Many facilities choose to replace older JWI equipment with a new Met-Chem filter press while maintaining the same footprint and process requirements.

We stock and manufacture replacement components for many JWI, US Filter, Siemens, Evoqua, and Xylem filter presses including:

  • Filter cloths
  • Center feed pipe assemblies
  • Gasketing cord
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Hydraulic power units
  • Plate handles
  • Corner liner pipes

Whether your nameplate says JWI, US Filter, Siemens, Evoqua, or Xylem, we can help identify your equipment and supply replacement parts.

In many cases, yes. The ownership changed over time, but many of the filter press designs remained similar.

Yes. Replacement cloths, center feed pipes, hydraulics, cylinders, gasketing, and many other components remain available.

Many Evoqua filter presses evolved directly from the original JWI product line.

Yes. Many facilities replace aging JWI equipment with a new Met-Chem filter press while maintaining the same process requirements.

Many presses currently operating in North America were installed between the 1980s and early 2000s and remain in service today.
