Understanding JWI Filter Press Model Numbers

What Do JWI Filter Press Numbers Mean?

If you operate a JWI filter press, you have probably seen model numbers like:

  • 470G-32-5-1
  • 630NG-32-20-8
  • 1000G-32-50-40
  • 1200NG-32-83-100

At first glance, these model numbers can look confusing. However, every section of the number tells you important information about the filter press design, plate style, and sludge capacity.

Understanding these model numbers is extremely important when ordering:

  • Replacement filter cloths
  • Filter press gaskets
  • Center feed pipe assemblies
  • Hydraulic components
  • Corner liner pipes
  • Replacement filter plates
  • Or even an entirely new JWI filter press

At JWI Filter Press Parts, Met-Chem helps customers identify and replace parts for nearly every legacy JWI press still operating today.

A standard JWI filter press model number is typically formatted like this:

Plate Size – Gasketed or Non-Gasketed – Cake Thickness – Number of Plates – Cubic Foot Capacity

Example:

470G-32-5-1

This breaks down into:

470Plate size in millimeters

Gasketed plates

32 mm cake thickness

5Number of filter plates

1Approximate cubic foot sludge capacity

The 6 Common JWI Plate Sizes

Most legacy JWI presses fall into one of six plate sizes:

Plate Size Typical Applications470 mm Small industrial systems, pilot systems

630 mm Small production systems

800 mm Medium industrial sludge dewatering

1000 mm Large industrial filter presses

1200 mm Heavy-duty high-volume dewatering

1500 mm Very large municipal and mining applications

These plate sizes determine many replacement parts including:

  • Plate dimensions
  • Cloth sizes
  • Gasket sizes
  • Center feed pipe lengths
  • Hydraulic closing force requirements

This is why knowing your exact model number is critical before ordering replacement parts.

G vs NG — Gasketed vs Non-Gasketed Plates

The second section of the model number tells you whether the press uses:

G = Gasketed Plates

Example:

1000G-32-50-40

This means the press uses recessed gasketed filter plates.

Benefits of gasketed plates include:

  • Cleaner operation
  • Reduced dripping
  • Better sealing
  • Higher pressure performance
  • Improved filtrate containment

Most modern presses use gasketed plates because they provide better performance and cleaner operation.

At Met-Chem, we stock:

  • Filter press gasketing
  • O-ring cord
  • Black filter plate cord
  • Replacement gasket material for JWI presses

For many customers searching online, these parts are also called:

  • Filter plate seals
  • Filter press seals
  • Gasket rope
  • Dovetail gasket cord

NG = Non-Gasketed Plates

Example:

1200NG-32-83-100

This means the press uses non-gasketed plates.

Non-gasketed presses typically use:

  • Cloths wrapped over the plate
  • Zip-tied cloth necks
  • No perimeter gasket seal

These presses are older but are still extremely common throughout:

  • Metal finishing plants
  • Municipal wastewater systems
  • Mining operations
  • Chemical processing facilities

Met-Chem continues to support both gasketed and non-gasketed JWI filter presses with replacement parts and service support.

What Does “32” Mean?

The “32” in the model number refers to:

32 mm Cake Thickness

This is the most common cake thickness used on JWI presses.

Cake thickness affects:

  • Chamber volume
  • Cycle time
  • Cake dryness
  • Overall sludge capacity

Thicker cakes generally provide:

  • Higher solids holding capacity
  • Longer filtration cycles
  • Larger cubic foot capacities

The 32 mm recessed chamber became one of the most widely used standards across JWI filter presses.

Number of Plates

The next number tells you how many plates are installed.

Example:

1200NG-32-83-100

This press contains:

  • 83 filter plates

More plates mean:

  • More filtration area
  • More sludge holding capacity
  • Larger overall cubic foot volume

The number of plates is very important when ordering:

  • Cloths
  • Gaskets
  • Shifter systems
  • Plate handles
  • Plate packs

Cubic Foot Capacity

The final number represents approximate sludge holding capacity in cubic feet.

Example:

470G-32-5-1

This is approximately a:

  • 1 cubic foot filter press

Example:

1200NG-32-83-100

This is approximately a:

  • 100 cubic foot filter press

This number is extremely important because filter presses are usually sized by:

Cubic Foot Sludge Capacity — NOT GPM

Many operators incorrectly try to size filter presses by flow rate alone. However, the true sizing factor is:

  • Total sludge generated
  • Solids loading
  • Cycle time requirements
  • Desired cake dryness

Correctly identifying your JWI model number helps avoid costly mistakes when ordering:

  • Filter cloths
  • Plate gasketing
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Center feed pipes
  • Corner liner pipes
  • Filter plates
  • Plate shifters

Many older JWI presses are still running today, but OEM support can be difficult to find.

Met-Chem specializes in:

  • Legacy JWI replacement parts
  • J-Press parts
  • Siemens filter press parts
  • Evoqua filter press parts
  • US Filter press parts
